Village of Newberry Closes Helen Street Brush Dump

Newberry, MI – The Village of Newberry has permanently closed the brush dump site located at the end of West Helen Street. Village crews finished fencing off the area on Wednesday, April 21, 2021.

Village Manager Allison Watkins stated, “This site was provided for residents to dispose of brush and leaves, but unfortunately there has been a consistent problem with illegal dumping over the years.  The Village received a violation notice from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) last fall due to that issue.  A decision was made to close the area to avoid further problems. The site will continue to be used as a snow pit by our Department of Public Works in the winter, but is now closed to the public.”

Residents who utilized the site for removal of brush and leaves are encouraged to participate in the brush and leaf pick up program on May 3, 2021 and again in the fall. Village crews will also be available over the summer to remove additional accumulations of leaves, brush, and small limbs placed along the alleys. Individuals should call 906-293-3433 to request pick up.
